Where do you want to go ?
Herne Bay Regatta - 26th June 1998.
The novice squad from Gravesend Rowing Club won the Jack Iggulan Memorial Trophy at Herne Bay Regatta on the 26th July 1998.
Gravesend were attending the coastal rowing (· ) regatta as guests, and competed against crews from other south coast rowing clubs.
The 1.5 mile race was started seven abreast . Gravesend pulled away straight from the start, and by halfway down the course length were 3 to 4 lengths up on the next boat. Of course turning a boat round a buoy is something river rowers never do; in coastal rowing - they do. Not being used to turning Gravesend came out of the turn still in the lead but having dropped a couple of boat lengths on their opposition. The final long slog up to the finish saw Gravesend extend its lead to approximately 4 lengths.
It is the first time that a crew from Gravesend Rowing Club has one at a coastal event for over 100 years.
The crew consisted of :
Stroke Leon Meadley
3 Tony Simmons
2 Jack Dean
1 Chris Browning

Gravesend Rowing Club had its largest entry in its history on Sunday 4th October at the Maidstone Scullers Head. Fourteen of it's members entered the 3.5 km race, many of whom, this was their sculling race.
Head races take place all throughout the winter season. Unlike regattas where crews race side by side in a number of heats, heads are time trials where the crews are started one after the other and the fastest time in each category wins.
The course was from the Palace in Maidstone to the Malta Inn by Allington Lock.
Sculling is the type of rowing where the oarsman has two oars (one in each side of the boat) and is in a boat on their own.
