GRAVESEND LADIES DO IT AGAIN!
As your classic vetnov crew (ie. we were
all women of 'mature years' before we took up rowing) we're delighted to have
had a second win in the WN4+ category at the Adur Head (a coastal event hosted
by Shoreham-on-Sea) on Sunday April 1st. Pictured below, the crew (from top
left to bottom right) was: Steve Cason (cox), Pippa Mester, Bev Barrow, Carole
Trowbridge (Club Captain) and Sue Beecham.
Having been the surprise winners last year,
in a borrowed boat (having never rowed in a coastal before), we got some serious
training under our belts this winter and went back to defend our title. Seven
boats contested the women's coxed novice four event and Gravesend RC came in
first, beating the home crew by 39 seconds and putting paid to any rumours that
last year's win was a fluke!
Being the lowest club on the Thames, Gravesend lends itself to both river and
coastal rowing and in 2006 the club bought a brand new Burgashell coastal four,
which means that crews are now able to train in all but the very worst conditions.
The four crew members are also founder members of the first ever women's eight
crew from Gravesend to race the Women's Eights Head of the River in both 2005
and 2006, and are looking forward to a return visit in 2008. In the meantime
we're after a river win to complement our coastal success, so we'll be racing
our socks off at heads and regattas. Watch this space!
